This month we caught up with Brad, a carpenter and joiner with over 13 years experience. Brad works in Bury St Edmunds and is excellent at what he does. We’re really proud of our clients and what they achieve and Brad is nothing short of an inspiration taking the plunge to set up his own business aged 30.

Tell us about your business

My business, Goodwin Carpentry & Construction Ltd, is an all-round building company where I aim to provide unparalleled service and allow my work to exceed all expectations of professionalism, integrity, and effectiveness. From the smallest and easiest job to the most strenuous, I make sure that I am not finished until the satisfaction of my customers is met.

I aim to finish each project in a timely manner and with the highest level of quality. With a focus on personalized service, competitive rates and customer satisfaction, I am always striving to meet and exceed industry expectations.

What drove you to start your business?

I had contemplated starting my own business for a couple of years prior but there just never seemed to be ‘the right time.’ Whether that be because of getting a mortgage sorted, having our son be born or other factors. But when I was approaching my 30th birthday I said to myself if I don’t do it now then I don’t think I ever will. So, my partner and I sat down and went through the pros and cons and the pros definitely came out on top. The main one for me being rather than having to work weekends for that extra money I can now make enough during the week and have my weekends with my little family.

What particular challenges did you have to overcome in setting up your business, and since then?

I wouldn’t say I had to overcome any challenges setting up my business but that doesn’t mean to say it doesn’t bring a lot of stress now that I do. With having to find the work, losing out on some jobs, all the paperwork, some long hours etc It is stress that I had prepared myself for and I love what I do to make it seem all worth it.

Why did you choose The Smart Business Hub?

I chose The Smart Business Hub because a close friend of mine, also in the building industry, recommended Sarah and her team and I couldn’t be happier with the service they provide. It is always a happy, feel-good energy every time I go into the office with smiling faces to greet you. I will definitely be recommending The Smart Business Hub to other people.

Have we helped you overcome any challenges, if so, how?

When I first met Sarah and we went through my business and the ins and outs of self-employment and being a limited company, I didn’t really know that much. The team at The Smart Business Hub have really taught me a lot about how businesses run.

What do you have planned for your business in the future?

So, in 10 years time I aim to be a well known and trusted building company with many employees. I hope that when a client is thinking of having any work done that my business is at the top of that list and also the top of other peoples who suggest a builder. Hopefully in many, many years to come my young son will follow in my footsteps and maybe keep the business growing.
